Last August I got this message from a friend in Manchester:
I'm just back from morning Mass seeing Fr. Chris afterwards being given a lift to Christies Hospital by Adrian Brooks to give Peter the sacrament of the sick/last rites.
Peter is in ward 12 being sustained by high tech care as he copes with the terminal stages of triple cancers in the bowel, liver and kidneys. Apparently his condition is too complex to have him transferred to St Ann's Hospice in Heald Green. Adrian tells me Peter is in good spirits but very close to his end and needs our prayers.
Gloomy news, I know but I thought might like to know.
Then last September, this:
Adrian told me this morning that Peter died peacefully on Wednesday last. His funeral will be at 10.00 on Friday of this week, here in St Ann's.
The end of a troubled and, I guess for his family, a troubling life. Last year he self-published an anthology of his own poetry which the local bookshop agreed to sell. It was largely about the problems of addiction. He sent me a copy and I could see it being used in high school social and personal ed sessions. He wasn't a bad poet but in many ways a sad man.
There is no excusing what he did, but as a colleague before it all happened, he was a pleasant person.
