I went on a couple of retreats at Loyola Hall in the early 1960s as a member of the SVP in the parish of St. Joseph's, Upton (Birkenhead) where Fr Gerard McGuiness was curate 1963-67. One of the Jesuit priests at Loyola then was Fr.Jerome O'Hea. I don't know whether he was still on the staff there at the time of the St. Augustine's retreats but he has become posthumously famous in recent times as the teacher and mentor of a certain African schoolboy in 1930s Rhodesia. That boy was Robert Mugabe. Fortunately, dying as he did in1970, Fr. O'Hea never knew anything of the tyrant his protege went on to become.
