Just heard that Richard Scrowston died suddenly on July 11.
I contacted Roger Callan who confirmed this and added the following:
"I travelled to Bristol last Friday and concelebrated Richard's funeral Mass at St. Bonaventure's in Bishopton in Bristol. This was in the presence of his family (Monica, his mother, John his brother and Rowena his sister) and his friends.
"Richard and I taught at St. Augustine's in the early 1970s, and he remained there after I left and went to the USA. When he left, he went to St. Brendan's, a sixth-form college in Bristol.
"It was a universal opinion that Richard was one of the most intelligent, not to say brilliant, people of our acqaintance. He will be deeply missed."
[Roger Callan]
Richard was, in my opinion, a brilliant popular and inspirational teacher. He had a belief in our capabilities that often exceeded our own. His rather idiosyncratic methods were highly effective. I was glad to meet up with him again at the 2001 reunion.
