My sympathies are totally with you, Mr Hulse!
Although I managed to dodge the school orchestra, I played clarinet in the South Manchester Youth Orhestra.(I also got abuse from idiots from other schools while carrying my instrument case)
I realised how difficult it was to produce any kind of tuneful , coherent noise. I actually thought that the school orchestra did very well, by the time it came to speech day.
