My dear Mark,

I was delighted to receive your letter and to hear of your achievements. You were one of the most able students in your generation and I am expecting great things from you.

Do not be disturbed about the changes which you may hear are taking place here. All human institutions undergo change, much of which is distressing. We have to pursue our course to the best of our ability and with God’s guidance in whatever circumstances we find ourselves. Remember that fifteen years ago St. Augustine’s. as we then called it, did not exist at all.

I do not know where I am going, except that I am leaving here, but you will, always be most welcome to come and see me.

With every best wish to yourself and to all members of your family,

Yours sincerely,

Mark Brennan, Esq., B.A.,
Downing College,
Cambridge.
