I would like to offer sincere condolences to Andrew and Peter Whatnall after hearing of the unexpected sad death of their brother and my friend, ex head boy, John. He was a most cultured and principled man and a great credit to the memory of our school. I hope as many of us old boys as possible can attend his funeral mass at St Pius RC Church, Alderley Edge, next week.

Despite some masters obvious enjoyment in administering corporal punishment I look back on my time at St Augustine's as probably the best time of my life. Some but not all the teachers were bullies and I like to think that the better one's helped to shape the life of many it not all the boys they taught. Some would think I was looking through rose tinted glasses.I received more than my fair share of the dreaded strap off many of the teachers and especially Spike but the friendships I made and the good teachers more than made up for that.

I was there 1972-1977 - mostly loved it though it was a bit of a trek from Ashton-On-Mersey. Went to Loreto afterwards which was an educational disaster!
